The development team behind the Artemis Study Hall Tracking System is actually made up of just one person. My name is Nathan Althoff, and I'm a former student-athlete from the University of Utah. I graduated with a degree in Organizational Communications in the spring of 2003, and have been a web application developer since the year 2000. I work full-time as a web application developer for a marketing company in Fargo, North Dakota, and have worked on the Artemis system for the last few years in my free time. That final school year before I graduated I also was an intern with the athletic academic department. My duties included managing the tutors & mentors, working with the athletes as needed and making sure the study hall program was kept in order. Before I took the intern position, the department kept track of the times students spent in study hall on paper. At the time, I was just beginning to learn how to build dynamic websites and applications, and was given the task of developing a way to keep track of how much time students were spending in study hall and distribute the reports to coaching staff and advisors. In other words, find a way to replace the current 'pen & paper' method. That first version of the study hall tracker was very rough. It had many errors and quirks, but I was able to get it to work well for 2 full years, and the advisors and coaches were both very happy with the system. In the summer of 2004, I was given the opportunity to update the entire system, and I was able to apply new methods of programming to my old idea and make huge improvements in the stability, accuracy and overall ease of use. Since then, I've decided to make this tool accessible to any college or university that is interested in making the task of tracking study hall time easier. In the spring of 2005, I took the time to update the code again (free of cost) and finished with the Artemis Study Hall Tracking System. It is an evolving tool that has unlimited potential, and has been a joy to work on when trying new ideas to see how they will fit in with the existing programming as well as find new ways to improve the quality of the tool itself. I'm excited to present it to the public, and am just as excited to see where it will go in the future. |
